As you step into the city of Encino located in the San Fernando valley is a quaint palm-lined boulevard, you’ll discover a community steeped in nearly two centuries of Californian history. Named after the saint/king of Spain, San Fernando was chosen to settle long before the rest of Los Angeles. The city emerged from the farms around the San Fernando Ray Mission, whose graceful colonnade still stands today.
In the early 1800s, the village developed into a small shopping mall, where grain, olives, grapes and thousands of animals raised by local Indians were bought and sold. San Fernando had a brief gold rush in the 1940s when pieces were found in a nearby canyon.
In 1874, Encino became the first organized community in the valley, winning the title “First City of the Valley”. With the arrival of the railroad two years later, the number of urban areas rose from 10 to 150.
The city of San Fernando is a delightful community of contrasts. What was once a farm and ranch next to the San Fernando Ray Mission is now a bustling center of manufacturing and commerce.
