Before the 1950s, Sherman Oaks was covered with citrus groves. The city's development began when Los Angeles Suburban Homes Co. bought 47,500 acres from a man named Moses Hazeltine Sherman. In 1927, Sherman bought a 1,000-acre parcel for $780 an acre. Today, Sherman Oaks is one of the most popular neighborhoods for families in the San Fernando Valley. Aside from its beautiful parks and green spaces, Sherman Oaks is home to numerous shopping malls and shopping complexes. The Village at Sherman Oaks has eclectic specialty stores, boutiques, and restaurants.


The Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Recreation Center is a great place for families, groups, or for a workout in the evening. The facility is conveniently located just off of the 101 freeway, and there are many community events throughout the year. If you're looking for a place to go for dinner, consider the Local Peasant, an American gastropub. The menu at The Local Peasant is American-style pub fare.
