Edgar Rice Burroughs Lived In Tarzana

In addition to living in Tarzana, author Edgar Rice Burroughs also had his office there. His home was a hilltop near Reseda Boulevard, close to Tarzana Drive. The mansion was once named General Otis Drive, but that road now dead-ends near the base of the former mansion. Edgar and Emma Burroughs had three children together. Edgar loved to travel with his family. The family packed up their car each summer and took a road trip to the Grand Canyon. They made stops at auto camps along the way, and often got to meet fellow travelers who shared the same interests as Burroughs.

After settling in the area in 1922, Burroughs purchased 550 acres of rancho land near Ventura Boulevard. He dubbed the area Tarzana Ranch, and two years later, he began to write novels. He eventually published 68 novels. Burroughs also became a war correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, covering the South Pacific Theater of World War II. When he was 66, he was the oldest war correspondent in the area.

While he did not have a formal background in science, Edgar Rice Burroughs was an innovator in science fiction. He put forth ideas for radar and sonar before they were widely available. He also envisioned auto pilot and homing devices on weapons. He also envisioned genetic cloning of living organs. Fans of Burroughs have websites dedicated to him. If you are interested in Edgar Rice Burroughs, consider checking out his biography.

The man who made Tarzana famous was born and raised in Chicago. His father was a businessman who purchased 540 acres in the Santa Monica Valley for $125,000. General Otis, the former editor of the Los Angeles Times, had sold the property two years earlier.

Burroughs loved the quiet and seclusion of the place, but he also liked the proximity to Hollywood. The man who wrote Rio Rita and other works lived there for nearly seven years.

In 1932, the MGM studios released Tarzan the Ape Man, starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Hara. It was a massive hit and produced numerous sequels. Edgar Burroughs' Tarzana house was for sale shortly after the movie's release. The famous writer had planned to relocate to Malibu. He later married James H. Pierce.
